Kids & Family Programs Summer 2008

Guide your parents on a seek & find in the garden or Westbury House. Use the signs throughout the Demonstration Gardens to learn about plants. Visit the play area at the Cottage Garden or imagine yourself entertaining friends at the Thatched cottage and log Cabins.

Storytime for Children -- Register now to join our story group.  Bring your 2-6 year old for a story reading and craft activity lead by an Old Westbury Gardens’ volunteer or staff member.  Adult must accompany child and organized groups of 5 or more cannot be accommodated.  Free with admission, but registration is required so we can provide enough craft materials. Every Wednesday, July 9 – August 13, 11:00 am – 12:00 pm.

Teddy Bear Picnic - Bring your furry friends and an adult for an afternoon in the most ideal children’s area of the Gardens- the Cottage Garden.  Enjoy finger foods and games adjacent to the Thatched Cottage, playhouse of Peggy Phipps (daughter that lived in Westbury House).  Recommended for children ages 3 – 8.  Registration and prepayment required. Member child $10; nonmember child $15; Accompanying adults are free. July 12; Raindate:  July 19, 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm.

Family Fridays -- Children are invited to discover the intriguing world of Old Westbury Gardens every Friday in August, 11:00 am – 3:00 pm.  Enjoy educational tours and interactive activities. Free with admission.

Bug Safari -- Hunt elusive grasshoppers, butterflies, predatory insects and other creepy, crawly creatures in the wild, untamed fields and gardens with Jody Gangloff of Cornell Cooperative Extension and Master Gardener Gene Lanzaro. Bring a butterfly net if you have one. Meet at the Plant Shop. August 9; 11:00 am.

Kidsfest  -- A day of family fun at the Gardens. Includes great music for adults and kids, interactive art, petting zoo, garden safari, scavenger hunts, games and more.  Perfect for kids 10 and under.  Free with admission.  Rain or shine.  September 14; 11:00 pm – 4:00 pm.

Special music guests include:

SOLD OUT - A Royal Tea -- Dress as your favorite princess, prince or knight for a magical outdoor tea party, including a take-home craft. Registration and prepayment required. Member child $10; nonmember child $15. Accompanying adults are free. September 20; 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm. Rain date September 27.
