Music Programs for Fall 2008

Poetica Musica

Artists-in-residence at Old Westbury Gardens perform chamber works in the Red Ballroom. Registration required. $25 (includes admission to house & gardens, and dessert reception); $20 Members, students & seniors. 6:45 pm Guided tour of house or garden, 7:30 pm Pre-concert talk, 8:00 pm Concert.  A meet the artists reception will follow the concert.  Registration and prepayment required.  Please call (516) 333-0048 x301.

 

October 18th

One Piano Twenty Fingers The renowned pianist, Gilbert Kalish will join Poetica Musica member, Maria Antonia Garcia for an evening of piano duets featuring piano treasures by Schubert, Mozart, Brahms and others. The magnificent Fantasy in F minor for piano duet by Franz Schubert and the famous Brahms’ Waltzes arranged for piano two pianists will be among the works presented.

Pianist, Gilbert Kalish has become a major figure on both the American and International musical scene. He is a frequent guest artist with many of the world's most distinguished chamber ensembles and soloists including the great mezzo-soprano Jan DeGaetani, the cellists, Timothy Eddy and Joel Krosnick, and the soprano Dawn Upshaw As an educator, he is Leading Professor and Head of Performance Activities at the State University of New York at Stony Brook. He has also served as the "Chairman of the Faculty" at Tanglewood Music Center. Mr. Kalish's discography encompasses classical repertory, 20th Century masterworks and new compositions. Of special note are his solo recordings of Charles Ives' Concord Sonata and the Sonatas of Joseph Haydn, and landmarks of the 20th Century such as Carter, Crumb and Schoenberg. In 1995 he was presented with the Paul Fromm Award by the University of Chicago Music Department for distinguished service to the music of our time.
